Alittle boy chased his sister around the main level of the inn hitting her with an empty wrapping paper tube. The little girl screamed so loud, with such a high pitch, I thought my ear drums were going to burst.

“Alex! Avery!” The children’s mother hurried after them.

“Oh, children…” I faked a smile.

Momma grinned, only hers was genuine. “I know. It’s so nice having little ones in the house. We don’t get a lot of kids. I especially love having them here around the holidays. The season is always more magical with little ones.”

She was right, in that we didn’t get many kids at the B & B. Our clientele was usually childless couples, either young couples before they’d had children or older couples after their children had grown and moved out. Families traveling with young kids normally opted for the hotel in the next town over. Not only was it cheaper than staying at a bed and breakfast, it had a pool which was always a draw for families.

The holidays always brought us a few families, though. Parents came wanting to give their children the feel of a small-town Christmas. Holiday festivals and activities were never in short supply in Willow Cove. Every weekend there seemed to be some sort of festival, and today was no exception.

Today’s festival was called Cocoa, Cookies, and Santa. And as one would expect it was filled with those three things. I think the five volunteers that make up the Willow Cove Tourism Board had run out of brilliant or even above average ideas at the point they laid the framework for today’s activities. There was nothing truly creative about the day, but it was a crowd pleaser, nonetheless.

The local businesses set tables outside their shops and sold holiday treats—mainly cookies or cups of hot chocolate. But some businesses tried to shake it up a little from year to year and would make different desserts. Miss Clara from the dance studio had these little reindeer candies last year that were made out of pretzels, melted Rolo chocolates, and green and red M&Ms and they were a hit. In truth, I bought two large bags of them as I was slightly obsessed. They were delish.

In the center of Willow Cove, in the town square, Santa sat under the gazebo and children—all hyped up on cookies and cocoa—got to sit on his lap and tell him their Christmas lists while their parents took pictures.

Momma had been making cookies for days. “Are we ready to load up?” she asked.

Gavin came in from outside. “Yes, Miss Claudia, I have our table and all the supplies we need loaded in the back of the truck. Steve has our spot saved, so now, we just need the cookies.”

We sat up our table in town every year in front of another business. This year we were sharing the space in front of the hardware store. The inn was a little bit of a walk from downtown, and visitors stayed downtown for the festival.
